We can't believe that Know The Origin is celebrating our 6th Birthday!
Let’s rewind to where it all started.
In 2013 a garment factory in Bangladesh, called the Rana Plaza, collapsed, killing over 1,100 workers. Our founder, Charlotte, was studying at London College of Fashion at the time. It threw up some big questions, and she felt compelled to hear from the vulnerable communities firsthand that the fast fashion industry exploits every day.
Their stories revealed a brutal reality - our most vulnerable communities and precious ecosystems are paying the price for our mass, cheap consumption. Charlotte wanted to change the industry. So, she found a skilled cooperative of organic cotton farmers in Hyderabad (India) and partnered with an audited manufacturer in Tirupur and built a new supply chain, step by step, face to face, from seed to sewn garment.
Know The Origin started as an Organic & Fair trade basics fashion line, but it is now home to the richest choice of certified brands. Our mission was and still is to raise a new standard of sustainability and make ethical the norm for everyone.
Here we are now, six years on and very grateful for all that we’ve achieved. Know The Origin started from Charlotte’s windowless, cupboard office in London, to now having 18 staff members, a warehouse & office in Manchester and two stores in London.
First and foremost, we want to thank you for the support we have received - we couldn’t have gotten here without you. 2021 has brought new challenges, and a lot of unknown but we are proud of how far the Know The Origin team has come.
At the start of the year, we moved into our own office space and warehouse in Manchester. It’s been amazing to have our own space (with an excessive amount of plants) with the office and warehouse just next door to each other.
Little did we know that in June, we’d be moving all our stock to London for our first pop-up since covid. We opened our pop-up in Angel, Islington, hoping that we could stay open for 3 months. 5 months later, we are still here and loving every minute of it. Meeting our amazing customers again, raving about new products and brands and delving into deep sustainability discussions.
From the success of our angel store, and seeing the huge demand for sustainable gifting from previous pop-ups, we have opened a second pop-up in Brent Cross Shopping Centre. This will be open until 10th January, and it has all your sustainable gifting needs for Christmas.
This year, we have reached 32,000 orders since starting. Each order you place invests back into fair wages for workers, restoring the environment and giving back to local communities. Thank you for the difference you are making through shopping with us.
The KTO team has tripled in size this year! From 6 to 18 members, we are ever so thankful for our new team members, helping us to run the stores, receiving deliveries, delivering excellent customer service and fulfilling online orders. The amazing Nina also joined our core team running our social media channels - bringing refreshing new content to your feed.
Our buyers have been busy growing our fashion brands from 60 to 73, and our conscious living brands from 95 to 175. Some of these new brands include organically sourced clothing from Thinking Mu, Vegan Saye trainers, to female-led start up Wuka Period Pants, and the world's first ultra-portable, reusable cup, Stojo.
We hope that 2022 will be even more epic - developing our own label, a permanent store location, more amazing ethical brands joining the platform, collaborations with other ethical brands and hosting more sustainability events. Just to name a few.
We can’t wait for what’s to come and are very grateful for the support and loyal following from each and every one of you. We couldn’t have come this far without you.
