West London-born founder Rima Sams’ passion for fabrics and design were cultivated from a young age through daily trips along the Portobello Road. She has since spent the last 20 years living between India and Europe and in that time she has developed a keen interest in khadi. The word ‘khadi’ has its roots in Sanskrit, and means ‘hand-woven and hand spun fabric made of natural fibres’. The traditional handloom technique is not only intrinsically sustainable, but creates a high quality, soft and luxurious fabric. The non gmo khadi cotton is personally sourced from small, remote villages in West Bengal near Kolkata, a region renowned for its materials. From growing the cotton locally, to cleaning and spinning to the weaving of the fabric – the whole village is involved in the process and by khadi weaving at home, villagers are able to fully support their families without having to leave to work in large cities. The fabric is then expertly sewn in a Fairtrade registered factory using safe, state of the art equipment.
