AK Threads aligns traditional artisanal practices with modern designs to create distinctive foundation garments. Their name comes from the Sanskrit word, Antakarana, meaning ‘for conscious living’. The brand was established whilst the creative director Gracie Sutton lived in India, working alongside rural artisans and women’s co-operatives. She saw the direct impact that female empowerment, sustainable wages and production had on local communities and wanted to provide rural artisans with access to the modern market, utilising skills and practices that are intrinsic to local cultures whilst producing clothing with endurance, fluidity and allure. With its emphasis on ecological and sustainable production, AK Threads source all their dyes from plants, botanicals and natural materials that use no chemicals, waste minimal amounts of water, reduce CO2 emissions, and remain biodegradable. AK Threads is committed to using natural dyes such as: indigo, recycled iron, Indian madder, jaggery cane sugar and pomegranate. The textiles AK Threads use are predominantly organic, grown from plants free of hazardous pesticides and synthetic dyes, thereby protecting the environment, the farmers, the workers and your own skin from harmful toxins and chemicals.
