  • Description
  • With its slender shape, the Banana Leaf suits finer hair types and medium to short lengths. The curved twist and hooked point allows you to wrap and secure your style in place, ready for whatever the day throws at you.

Available in sustainably sourced Teak, Tamarind and Rosewood. All of our Saya Design's accessories are hand carved from waste offcuts left over from plantations in Indonesia. No one piece is ever the same. Your Banana Leaf hair stick arrives in fully recyclable packaging with a fabric sleeve to protect it whilst traveling.

Benefits of Wood? | Wooden combs and accessories help to reduce anti static, breakage and damage to hair, unlike plastic and metal. The porous nature of wood absorbs and redistributes your natural oils and maintains healthy hair continuously through your wash cycle. Wooden tips also gently massage your skin, stimulating blood flow which over time promotes hair growth. View our shop here to explore our whole collection.

    Dimensions | Length x 17cm | Width x 2.5cm | Depth x 1cm

Craftsmanship | All of Saya's collections are uniquely designed, inspired by local flora and fauna in Indonesia. The process from rough-cut waste to hand-polished combs and forks are made by Saya's artisans in Indonesia, creating truly one-of-a-kind pieces every-time. They are unique from the details in their shape and in the grains of the wood. All of Saya's accessories are hand carved from waste offcuts left over from plantations in Indonesia.

Inspired by Nature | The Banana Leaf’s long, curved shape is inspired by the banana leaf plants that are seen all over South East Asia. The leaves are used in many Balinese Hindu ceremonies, both symbolically, and functionally as they are woven into baskets to hold offerings to the gods.

Recyclable Packaging | Your piece will arrive in a fully recyclable mailer bag with a recyclable box and protective fabric sleeve to keep it safe when traveling. The box is handmade from papaya fruit pulp and vegetable inks. Once used, you can place it in the food compost.

    • Keep scratch free whilst travelling using the fabric pouch.

  • How To Use
  • How to do a “High Plait"

Use your Banana Leaf hair stick to create a high bun. This generally suits shorter hair but can work with other types of hair too.

    1. Plait your hair from behind, down the centre of your head, hold it tightly.

    2. Lift the bottom of plait to the top of your head.

    3. If possible, tuck the end into place.

    4. If your hair is very long, you may have to fold the plait instead first, and then pin to the top.

    5. Use the hair stick to secure the top of the plait.

    6. Weave your hair stick it through multiple layers of hair until firmly in place.

How to do a "Platted Bun"

In this tutorial we use the Banana Leaf to create a plaited bun. This generally works really well with curly but can work with other types of hair too.

    1. Plait your hair down the centre, from behind

    2. Then you can either ‘fold’ or 'twist' the plait into itself to make a bun.

    3. Choose either a firm or loose hold,

    4. Then take the hairpin and thread it like a needle through the bun.

    5. You want to make sure it's gone through multiple layers of the hair so it will feel nice and secure.

Saya Designs

SAYA Designs was created out of a deep love of nature, a growing awareness of environmental issues, and a desire to create things with a real story to tell. SAYA takes waste material, root wood, and turns it into something beautiful and purposeful, while giving back to those dedicated to protecting our planet. At a time of globalisation, industrialisation, and climate change, being able to put money directly into the pockets of local artisans is a very powerful thing. Each salvaged root completes an amazing cycle, as with each hair stick purchased up to 10 endangered trees are planted in community run forestry projects in local areas.
